The Russian Foreign Ministry announced today that it has summoned the Finnish Ambassador to Russia, Marja Liivala, to deliver a strong official protest regarding the burning of the Russian state flag in front of the Russian Embassy building in Helsinki on February 24.
According to a statement from the Russian Foreign Ministry, the incident occurred during a protest marking the fourth anniversary of Russia's full invasion of Ukraine. Unidentified individuals burned the Russian flag in front of the diplomatic facility.
" A firm protest was presented to the head of the Finnish diplomatic mission due to a provocation that occurred in front of the Russian embassy building in Finland on February 24, when unidentified persons burned the state flag of the Russian Federation ," the official Russian statement said.
The Russian side described the act as "an open and blasphemous act against the state symbol of Russia," emphasizing that it constitutes a serious provocation and demanding that the Finnish authorities take measures to prevent similar incidents in the future.
The incident comes at a time of high tensions between the two countries, since Finland's accession to NATO in April 2023 and the closure of land borders with Russia.
On February 24, 2026, mass protests against the war in Ukraine were held in Helsinki, where symbolic actions such as trampling the Russian flag under the wheels of cars or burning it were also observed, as an expression of solidarity with Ukraine.
