The accident occurred between via Vittorio Veneto and via Lazzaretto, in the center of Milan; some of the injured are in serious condition.
A serious accident occurred in Milan on Friday afternoon, causing one death and 39 injuries. A tram derailed and crashed into shop facades, injuring not only passengers but also pedestrians who were in the tram's path at the time.
According to initial reports, three people were seriously injured and transported by ambulance. One is in critical condition. Another 38 people suffered minor injuries, some of whom were treated at the scene. Firefighters are working to free another passenger trapped under the tram.
Five vehicles were sent from the headquarters on Via Messina to the scene, transporting a total of 25 people. It appears that the tram was travelling at a fairly high speed before it derailed.
According to initial reports, the train, after derailing for reasons that are still under investigation, crashed into a shop window on the corner of Viale Vittorio Veneto and Via Lazzaretto.
"I thought it was an earthquake. I was sitting and I fell to the ground, along with the other passengers. It was terrible," said one of the passengers who was on the derailed tram. "Luckily, I only hit my knee, but the man next to me was bleeding from his head," he continued. "It took me a while to get up and get off.
"It concerns tram line 9, while the prosecution has launched an investigation for manslaughter."
The mayor of Milan, Beppe Sala, arrived on via Vittorio Veneto, shortly after the attorney general Marcello Viola, to receive the first information about the accident.
Prosecutor Viola: "We are investigating for manslaughter"
Milan's chief prosecutor, Marcello Viola, headed to the scene of the incident where tram 9 derailed, causing one victim and dozens of injuries, some in serious condition. The prosecutor's office has launched an investigation into manslaughter and negligent injury. The case has been entrusted to the willing prosecutor Elisa Calanduçi.
The head of transport at the Municipality of Milan, Arianna Censi, also arrived at the scene of the accident. "We don't know anything yet, we are going to verify the situation," she declared.
First balance sheet
At least 25 people were injured when a tram derailed. Most were passengers who were on board when the vehicle derailed, crossed the traffic lane and ended up crashing into a shop. The tram was full of passengers at the time of the accident, and they were thrown to the ground by the impact.
The victim was found under the derailed tram and was most likely a passerby walking on Viale Vittorio Veneto.
Passengers in shock
"We felt something under the tram, then we all fell and crashed into each other. We didn't understand what happened," said a woman traveling to her daughter's house. "Everything happened suddenly. The tram was supposed to go straight, but it went off the tracks and crashed into the wall," added another passenger.
Many people sat on the sidewalk near the accident site, while 118 emergency teams, firefighters, and police provided first aid.

“Luckily I only hit my knee, but the man next to me was bleeding from his head,” he added. “It took me a while to get up and down.”
