Line 9 vehicle collided with a building on Viale Vittorio Veneto; witness: "I saw death with my own eyes"
A tram on line 9 derailed in Milan and crashed into a building, hitting several people. According to Italian media, the incident occurred shortly after 4 p.m. on viale Vittorio Veneto, while the vehicle was traveling from piazza Repubblica towards Porta Venezia.
According to initial reports, the tram was traveling at a very high speed when, for reasons that authorities are investigating, it derailed and ended up on the sidewalk, crashing into a storefront. Several people were trapped under the vehicle.
Several ambulances and fire brigades intervened at the scene. Rescue teams removed at least ten injured people, while firefighters continue to work to free a passenger who was trapped. Five fire engines with around 25 firefighters were sent from the center of via Messina.
Authorities have not yet clarified whether the pedestrians were crossing the road and whether the tram driver performed an immediate braking or sudden maneuver to avoid them.
A witness told the media: "I saw death with my own eyes. I was walking when the tram came. I miraculously escaped because I jumped inside a typical Milanese gate."
Investigations into the causes of the accident continue.
