The attacks by the United States and Israel on Iran appear to have alarmed Serbia's president, Aleksandar Vučić, who warned of "far-reaching consequences on the world political stage" and stressed the need for Serbia to strengthen its defense capabilities.

In an interview with Informer television, a media outlet close to the government, Vučić said that developments in the Middle East could lead to political upheaval in Iran, suggesting that "the main battle will take place for the change of government in Iran."

His reaction comes after US President Donald Trump confirmed the launch of the attacks and vowed to eliminate the "threat from the Iranian regime." Meanwhile, the Israeli military announced that Iran had launched a retaliatory missile strike on Israel and several other countries in the region. So far, there have been no reports of casualties.

Vučić compared the situation to the NATO intervention in the former Yugoslavia in 1999 and the overthrow of the Slobodan Milošević regime. According to him, the intervention at that time was aimed at changing the regime in Belgrade and securing the independence of Kosovo.

"All this is being implemented as it happened in Serbia," Vučić said, adding that even in the case of Iran, according to him, the goal is to orient the country towards "Western values."

NATO's intervention in 1999 followed persecution and crimes by Serbian forces against the Albanian population during the Kosovo war, which have been documented by the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia. After the bombing ended, Serbian forces withdrew from Kosovo, which declared independence in 2008. Serbia does not recognize its independence.

During the interview, the Serbian president emphasized that Serbia will invest in new air defense systems.

"I will keep the peace, but it also depends on how strong you are. We will provide extremely powerful systems. We are seriously considering this, we have multi-layered protection," Vučić declared.

His statements come at a time of heightened international tension, while official Belgrade continues to pursue a balanced policy between the West and other global partners.
