British Defense Secretary Ben Wallace has said he will not compete to become the next head of NATO.
Wallace has been rumored recently as one of the names that could take the leadership of the Euro-Atlantic alliance and that even Rishi Sunak would talk to Joe Biden about this issue.
Asked about running the alliance from the fall, Wallace told the Economist: "That's not going to happen." Several NATO members, including the US, are believed to have lobbied Stoltenberg to stay. But Secretary of State Antony Blinken said the US was not "promoting any particular candidate".
NATO has 31 members who agree to help each other if attacked. Speaking to German media about the top job last month, Wallace said: “I've always said it would be a good job. This is a job I would like. But I'm also loving the job I do now.”
Despite his apparent enthusiasm to succeed Stoltenberg as the next head of NATO, he appears to have failed to win the support of key allies. Biden described Wallace as "very qualified" for the job when he met recently in Washington with Prime Minister Rishi Sunak.
But privately, the US is believed to be one of the countries trying to persuade Stoltenberg to stay, at least for another year.
