US President Donald Trump said on Saturday that he is working with Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry, whom he has appointed as a special envoy for Greenland, to launch a floating hospital to the Arctic island.
Trump has repeated on several occasions his intention to take control of Greenland, an autonomous territory under the sovereignty of the Kingdom of Denmark.
He made the plan public in a post on the Truth Social platform, just before a dinner with Republican governors at the White House. During the event, Trump sat next to Landry and had a long conversation with him.
"In partnership with the fantastic Governor of Louisiana, Jeff Landry, we will be sending a floating hospital to Greenland to care for the many people who are sick and not getting care there. It's coming!!!," Trump wrote.
Neither the White House nor Landry's office provided any clarification on the post. They did not specify whether Danish or Greenlandic authorities had requested the hospital ship, nor did they identify the categories of patients who would benefit from the assistance.
Trump's reaction came hours after the Danish Arctic Command announced a medical evacuation operation off the coast of Nuuk. A US submarine was about seven nautical miles off the Greenlandic capital when a crew member called for emergency assistance. Danish authorities transported the person by SeaHawk helicopter to a hospital in Nuuk, according to a statement from the Danish Ministry of Defense.
