Two "Trumpians" against Trump: Who are the two Harvard lawyers

Trump blocks funding for one of the world's elite universities...

Two lawyers very close to Donald Trump - Robert Hur and William Burck - are leading Harvard's legal battle against the White House.

The University of Massachusetts rejected their demands on Monday, and the Trump administration immediately punished the university by freezing $2.2 billion in funding and blocking a $60 million contract.

Since January, the federal government has threatened to cut funding to America's universities unless they limit diversity policies and punish what it called rampant anti-Semitism on campuses.

It's been a tense few weeks for Harvard's legal team, until their team ruled that the new demands from the federal government on Friday were illegal. The university rejected them, unlike other major universities like Columbia, which made concessions to avoid losing $400 million.

Surprisingly, Harvard is represented by two lawyers very close to Trump, Robert Hur and William Burck, who say the university has made major changes in the last 15 months, imposing greater penalties for those who violate university rules. They have also focused on promoting ideological diversity.

Hur is the former Maryland district attorney appointed by Trump during his first term, later selected as special counsel to investigate classified documents that Joe Biden, as vice president, failed to turn over to the National Archives. He was the one who exonerated the then-president in February 2024. In the 345-page report, Hur also wrote that Biden didn't even remember when his son Beau died, drawing the then-president's ire. " How dare you talk about that? " he said at the time.

Burck, on the other hand, is a longtime Republican — he was an adviser to the George W. Bush administration — who also recently worked with the Trump Organization, helping the company of the 45th and 47th presidents of the United States maintain — as Eric Trump, the company’s executive vice president, explained in January — ethical standards and avoid a potential second conflict of interest after the war ends. A managing partner at Quinn Emanuel Urquhart & Sullivan — whose clients include Elon Musk — Burck also defended Trump strategist Steve Bannon when he was arrested on fraud charges over an online fundraiser to support the construction of a wall to prevent migrants from crossing the border with Mexico. / Adapted from “Pamphlet” by “Corriere Della Sera”
