Donald Trump's administration will close nearly 30 US embassies and consulates around the world, according to an internal State Department document published by CNN.
The list includes, among others, US embassies in Malta, Luxembourg, Lesotho, the Republic of Congo, the Central African Republic and South Sudan.
At the same time, it is proposed to close five consulates in France, two in Germany, two in Bosnia and Herzegovina, one in the United Kingdom, one in South Africa and one in South Korea.
The document also suggests reducing the presence in two "key" countries for American counterterrorism policy, Iraq and Somalia, as well as "redefining the size" of other diplomatic missions.
It is not yet known whether Secretary of State Marco Rubio has approved the proposals. The upcoming changes are part of a broader plan to drastically redesign the functioning of the US government, which bears the stamp of the so-called Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), the body created by Elon Musk, with the aim of simplifying and compressing the federal government.
