Two people were killed and about 40 others were injured in a serious tram accident in Milan, where the vehicle derailed and crashed into a building.
According to Italian media, the incident is suspected to have occurred after the switch for changing tracks was not activated, causing the tram to pass on the wrong line.
Italian public broadcaster Rai reported that one of the main leads in the investigation is related to the health of the tram driver. According to these reports, there is a possibility that he lost consciousness or suffered a health problem, which could have prevented him from activating the mechanism to switch to the correct tracks.
Authorities have not yet given a final version of the causes of the accident, while investigations are ongoing. The Milan Prosecutor's Office announced the launch of an investigation for manslaughter, with the aim of determining responsibility and fully clarifying the circumstances of the incident.
More than 30 firefighters and Civil Protection personnel responded to the scene, working to extract the injured and secure the area.
