The Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) announced on November 14 that lawmaker Oleksandr Dubinskiy has been officially informed that he is suspected of treason and a court in Kyiv has ordered him to be detained for 60 days.
The SBU said Dubinskiy is suspected of collaborating with Russia and engaging in subversive actions against Ukraine, charges he has denied.
"The District Court of Pečerski has issued the preventive measure in the form of detention for the people's deputy who is suspected of treason and participation in a criminal organization", SBU said through a statement.
The court made this decision through a meeting behind closed doors.
The SBU said it has " exposed the deputy [Oleksandr Dubinskiy] to have participated in criminal activities supervised by officials of the General Staff of the Russian Federation armed forces and to have carried out subversive activities against Ukraine" .
The court "accepted the SBU's suspicions as well-founded and that the evidence was sufficient," the statement said, adding that Dubinskiy will be held in custody without parole.
Dubinsky confirmed through a video published on his Telegram channel that he has been ordered to remain in custody until January 12.
"This is called 'the new year in the detention center' because of the criticism of the Government," he said.
Dubinskiy was expelled from Ukraine's ruling Servants of the People party in 2021 after he was placed on a US sanctions list on suspicion of election meddling, charges he denies. He has continued to be part of the Parliament as an independent deputy.
On November 10, the SBU announced that it had completed an investigation into the actions of an unnamed lawmaker, who it said was suspected of forgery and providing false information to authorities in order to travel abroad.
Ukrainian media reported that it was about Dubinskiyn.
On November 13, the SBU announced that new charges had been filed against the lawmaker.
The SBU said the suspect "was part of a criminal organization formed by the Main Directorate of the General Staff of the Russian armed forces [GRU]" and his main task was "to undermine the social and political situation in Ukraine and discredit the state in the international arena"./ REL
