The former president of the United States of America, Barack Obama, has raised the question of why the explosion of the submarine 'Titan' with 5 victims has received wide media coverage, while a boat with 700 refugees in Greece has not been talked about so much by the media.
Speaking at the Stavros Niacrchos Foundation in Athens, hours before it was confirmed that the submarine had exploded, Obama said this is an unacceptable situation.
"It is unacceptable that the expedition has received more attention than the hundreds killed by the sinking of a boat off the Greek coast. The submarine tragedy is receiving minute-by-minute coverage around the world. This is understandable because we all want and pray for these people to be saved. But the fact that this has received much more attention than the fact that 700 people drowned is an unacceptable situation. The International Organization for Migration called it one of the 'worst maritime tragedies in the last decade,' Obama said.
The overcrowded boat carrying hundreds of Pakistani, Syrian, Egyptian and Palestinian refugees sank on June 14, two days before OceanGate's $250,000 Titanic wreck tour was reported missing. 82 passengers have been found dead, 104 of the more than 750 on board have been rescued and the rest are still missing. More than 100 children are among the missing.
The victims of the sinking of the Titan submarine are OceanGate CEO Stockton Rush, French Titanic expert Paul-Henri Nargeolet, British billionaire Hamish Harding, Pakistani businessman Shahzada Dawood and his son Suleman, who was only 19 years old.
