Robert Mueller, the former US special counsel whose investigation into alleged Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election significantly influenced Donald Trump's first term, has died at the age of 81.
The cause of death has not yet been announced.
Mueller led the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) from 2001 to 2013, taking office just days before the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001.
In 2017, he was appointed special prosecutor by then-Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein to oversee the federal investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election.
After the news of his death was published, US President Donald Trump reacted with a statement on social media, saying: " Robert Mueller just died. Well, I'm glad he's dead. He can't hurt any more innocent people ."
Trump's statement has drawn attention for its tone, while the relationship between him and Mueller was tense during and after the investigation.
