Robert Mueller, the former director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and special counsel who led the investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 US presidential election, has died at the age of 81.
The news was confirmed by his family.
"It is with deep sadness that we share the news that Bob passed away last night," the family statement said, which also requested privacy.
Mueller had a long career in American public service. He led the FBI for more than a decade and was later appointed special counsel to investigate possible ties between Donald Trump's campaign and the Russian government.
In August last year, the family announced that he had been diagnosed with Parkinson's disease in 2021.
Further details on the circumstances of the death and official reactions are awaited.
