US President Donald Trump said he was "pleased" with the investigation into the assassination attempt on him last year during an election rally in the state of Pennsylvania, while pointing out serious security failures.
In an interview broadcast on Fox News with his daughter-in-law, Lara Trump, the president said he has been briefed several times by the FBI, Secret Service and Department of Justice, and praised Attorney General Pam Bondi for her role in the investigation.
"Pamela is doing a fantastic job ," Trump said. " They briefed me and I'm happy with that. I'm happy with it ," he stressed.
Trump criticized security failures that allowed the gunman to open fire from a building near where he was speaking to supporters, saying: "They should have had someone in the building. That was a mistake. They should have had communications with the local police. They were not connected and they should have been connected."
The Butler assassination occurred during a campaign rally for then-candidate Trump on July 13, 2024. The shooting injured Trump when a bullet grazed his right ear.
Firefighter Corey Comperatore was killed in the shooting and two others were wounded. The shooter, 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks, was killed by Secret Service agents at the scene after the shooting.
"It was unforgettable," Trump said.
The president praised the Secret Service sniper, identifying him only as "David," for his quick and accurate response.
"Within less than five seconds, he managed to capture it from a long distance with one shot. He did a fantastic job ," the US president said.
