US President Donald Trump has extended the deadline for the sale of TikTok for another 75 days.
While there has been "tremendous progress" in negotiations on the short-form video service, more time is needed, Trump said Friday.
He is eager to reach a deal with TikTok and China. The sale deadline was set to end on Saturday at 00:00 local time (06:00 CET).
A statement from TikTok or the government in Beijing was not immediately available. Congress had passed a law requiring TikTok's Chinese parent company, ByteDance, to sell its U.S. operations by Jan. 19, 2025, citing a potential national security threat. Otherwise, the platform would be blocked nationwide.
Trump had initially extended that deadline until April 5. On Thursday, he spoke of a near-term solution. "We're close to a deal with a very good group of people," he said aboard Air Force One. "Several" investors are involved. He did not provide details.
Trump hinted that TikTok could be part of a deal with China over US tariffs on Chinese imports.
Asked if he was willing to negotiate tariffs with countries, the president said: "As long as they give us something good. For example, TikTok."
