The humanitarian situation in Lebanon is rapidly deteriorating, as the number of people forced to flee their homes continues to rise due to the escalation of fighting and evacuation orders issued by Israel.
According to the International Organization for Migration (IOM), nearly 1 million people have been displaced within the country, creating one of the largest humanitarian crises in Lebanon in recent years.
IOM Director General Amy Pope said she was "deeply alarmed" by reports of an attack on displaced people sheltering in Beirut, where at least eight people were killed and dozens more injured.
According to the UN migration agency, many families have been forced to abandon their homes due to the intensification of fighting and evacuation orders in some areas of the country.
Around 125,000 people have been sheltered in collective centres managed by the Lebanese authorities, while many others are finding shelter with relatives, friends or local communities. However, thousands remain without adequate housing conditions, with some families forced to sleep on the streets.
Many of the displaced have arrived in the capital with only the clothes they were wearing and are now living in tents or makeshift shelters, which offer little protection from the bombing.
Amy Pope warned that the situation requires urgent international assistance to avoid worsening the humanitarian crisis.
"International Humanitarian Law requires parties to the conflict to allow and facilitate rapid humanitarian assistance to civilians in need. This must be respected now ," she said.
