Katherine Remler has resigned as Goldman Sachs' Chief Legal Officer and General Counsel after the US Department of Justice released nearly three million documents related to the Jeffrey Epstein case.

Her departure takes effect on June 30.

The decision follows the release of documents on Jan. 30, which include years of electronic communications from a person identified as “Kathy Ruemmler.” In some of the emails, she refers to Epstein as “Uncle Jeffrey” and thanks him for gifts that included personal items.

In one email from 2018, the sender thanks Epstein for a gift she describes as thoughtful. In another message from January 2019, she mentions several gifts she claims she received from him, including boots, a handbag and a wristwatch.

Remler, who previously served as a White House counsel during Barack Obama's presidency and co-chaired the bank's reputation management committee, informed CEO David Solomon of her decision in writing. She stressed that she places the institution's interests above all other considerations and that she is leaving with institutional responsibility.

In his response, Solomon praised her contribution to the bank's legal and regulatory affairs and confirmed that he has accepted the resignation.

After the emails were released, her representative said Remler had committed no wrongdoing and that the documents did not indicate any illegal actions. According to her, Remler knew Epstein through her work as a criminal lawyer, they had a mutual client and maintained a professional relationship.

Remler's resignation is part of a series of senior management departures that followed the release of documents on the Epstein case.
