Turkey proposes new round of negotiations between Ukraine, US and Russia, as Kiev and Ankara agree on joint projects in energy and security
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky confirmed that Turkey is ready to host a new round of negotiations that will include Ukraine, the United States and Russia, following a high-level meeting with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan in Istanbul on April 4. The news was announced by the Office of the President of Ukraine.
During the meeting, Erdogan reaffirmed Turkey's readiness to play an active role in achieving a lasting peace and proposed organizing new talks in Istanbul. "Erdogan proposes holding peace talks in Istanbul; we are ready to participate," Zelensky told the media after a separate meeting with Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew.
The two leaders also discussed concrete steps for cooperation in the energy field, including gas infrastructure and the development of new gas fields. Zelensky stressed that the relevant teams will finalize the details of the agreements in the coming days.
In a response on Telegram, Zelensky announced that the parties agreed on new steps in security cooperation, including support from Ukraine in areas such as expertise, technology and experience. He also expressed gratitude to the Turkish people for their continued support for Ukraine's independence and territorial integrity.
Zelensky's visit to Turkey comes at a key diplomatic moment, just a day after Erdogan held a phone call with Russian President Vladimir Putin about Black Sea security and the conflict in the Middle East. Russia has recently accused Ukraine of attacking the TurkStream gas pipeline, a claim Kiev has denied. Meanwhile, Moscow has not responded to Zelensky's proposal for an Easter ceasefire and protection of energy infrastructure.
Zelensky has previously linked conflicts in Europe and the Middle East, accusing Russia of fueling tensions in the Gulf region through its support for Iran. In this context, the talks in Istanbul aim to address related security threats and strengthen Turkey's role as a mediator in regional issues of logistics and energy security.
