The plan to remove 1,000 people from Earth on a 400-year journey in a spaceship

The 'Chrysalis' plan describes a self-sufficient space 'city' that would travel for centuries, but it is far from reality.

A mission without return, a journey lasting four centuries and a spacecraft 58 kilometers long. "Chrysalis" is one of the most ambitious concepts ever presented for the future of humanity outside Earth, trying to give a more "realistic" dimension to the idea of interstellar travel.

The plan envisions transporting up to 1,000 people to the exoplanet Proxima b, which is located more than 4 light-years away in the Proxima Centauri system. In total, the route would exceed 40 trillion kilometers, with the journey taking about 400 years, meaning that many generations would live and die aboard the craft before reaching their destination.

More city than spaceship

We're not talking about a simple spaceship, but the idea of a city that travels alone in space. Inside Chrysalis, there are plans for housing, food-growing areas, industrial facilities, and even artificial ecosystems that will help maintain the atmosphere.

Artificial gravity plays a central role in the design, with the aim of avoiding the serious effects of long-term weightlessness, such as loss of bone mass and muscle strength. The living spaces resemble vertical structures, such as buildings, more than the classic modules of today's space missions.

The biggest bet is not technical

Beyond technology, the concept also attempts to answer a more complex question: how does a society that has lived in isolation for centuries function? The proposal envisions a population that could reach up to 2,400 people, with estimates considering a sustainable level of around 1,500.

This means strict resource management, birth control, and ongoing education to maintain critical knowledge. Roles such as doctors, engineers, and farmers are considered essential, while the existence of structured educational systems is essential for mission continuity.

The role of artificial intelligence

In the Chrysalis model, artificial intelligence is not limited to managing the ship's systems, but extends to the functioning of society itself. Its uses include crisis prediction, data analysis, and decision-making support.

At the same time, issues also arise regarding who determines the limits of this intervention and how its power will be viewed by future generations who will live on the boat.

Light years from implementation

Despite the details, Chrysalis is not an active space program. It is a theoretical engineering proposal, submitted as part of a design competition, that attempts to capture what a mission of this scale would require.
