Attacks on Iran nuclear plant, International Atomic Energy Agency: Major

The head of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Rafael Grossi, has expressed "deep concern" about the latest military attack that is said to have occurred near the Bushehr nuclear power plant in Iran, warning that any damage to the operational facility could cause a major radiological accident with consequences over a wide area.

Grossi said the attack took place on Tuesday evening. According to information provided by Iran, a projectile hit the plant's grounds, but caused no damage to the plant itself or injuries to staff, and its operation remains normal.

"Since Bushehr is an operating nuclear power plant and contains a large amount of nuclear material, any damage could result in a major radiological accident that would affect a large area in Iran and beyond ," Grossi stressed.

The IAEA Director-General again called for “maximum restraint” from all parties to avoid the risk of a nuclear accident. He stressed the importance of respecting the “seven pillars” of ensuring nuclear security during armed conflict, warning that any attack near or on nuclear installations violates fundamental principles of international security and “should never happen.”

The Atomic Energy Organization of Iran described the incident as a “renewed attack” by the “US-Israeli enemy.” Iran has blamed the US and Israel for the attack, but neither side has yet to comment. It is the second reported attack near Bushehr in as many days, following a similar incident earlier in March. The Bushehr plant is Iran’s only operating nuclear power plant and is located on the Persian Gulf coast.

The situation surrounding Iran's nuclear facilities remains highly tense amid the recent escalation of regional tensions. The IAEA continues to closely monitor developments and urges all parties to avoid any actions that could jeopardize nuclear security. CNN has reached out to the U.S. Department of Defense and the Israeli military for comment, but has not yet received a response.
