According to an analysis published by CNN, the United States is considering the possibility of a military operation to take control of Kharg Island, a strategic point in the Persian Gulf that processes about 90% of Iran's oil exports.
The development comes as the Trump administration has increased its military presence in the region, deploying amphibious ships, landing craft and thousands of marines. Kharg Island, although small in size, is considered vital to the Iranian economy due to its large storage capacity and infrastructure for supertankers.
Military experts say a ground operation would face serious challenges. According to former NATO commander James Stavridis, US forces would have to ensure complete air and naval dominance over a wide area, while also facing Iranian drones, ballistic missiles and naval mines.
Another risk is the possibility of Iranian retaliation, including attacks on US ships and infrastructure in neighboring Gulf countries. Regional officials have expressed concern that such intervention could escalate the conflict and cause heavy casualties.
On the other hand, US intelligence suggests that Iran has strengthened the island's defenses, deploying anti-aircraft systems and land mines in anticipation of a possible attack.
However, it remains unclear whether seizing Kharg Island would give Washington enough leverage to force Iran to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, a key point for global energy trade. Some analysts question whether such a move would actually influence Tehran's decision-making.
In this context, the debate within the US administration remains open, between the aim of exerting maximum pressure on Iran and the risk of a broader regional conflict.
