What has history shown us about the ceasefire between Israel and Hamas?!

If the Hamas-Israel deal goes as agreed, both sides will have a ceasefire for at least four days.

But until the agreement is implemented on the ground, the war in Gaza will continue, most likely with a new intensity.

In previous wars between Hamas and Israel, such as in 2012 and 2014, the days and hours leading up to a short-term ceasefire were some of the most difficult, with both sides making the most of the remaining time before the ceasefire began by striking intensity each other.

Until the end of the war in 2014, Israel pounded Gaza with airstrikes and rockets fired from ships positioned off the coast.

Gaza's various militant factions fired a barrage of rockets at Israel. Both sides seemed to be emptying their loads with tremendous firepower.

This time, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has promised to continue the war after the ceasefire.

It may seem that a ceasefire or pause in the fighting would be a boon to Hamas, which sparked this latest round of conflict after its attack on Israel despite thousands of Palestinians caught in the crossfire.

But throughout the group's history, Hamas has been pragmatic, modifying both ideology and military strategy to suit conditions on the ground.

Hamas has repeatedly said over the years that it will never recognize Israel, but its government in Gaza has previously called for an end to Israel's military occupation of the Palestinian territories and proposed a long-term ceasefire.

Any notion of this idea was quashed during her cross-border attack on October 7.

Even a temporary ceasefire will give Hamas' military wing time to regroup and prepare for the next phase of the war. /Sky News
