What Valencia and Albania teach us

Ask someone to name the most popular coastal destinations in the Mediterranean and the answer will be a list of the “usual suspects”: Venice, Ibiza, Lisbon, Barcelona, Salento, Portofino, Nice, Amalfi. However, a survey by "Who?", the British consumer taste website, suggests that tourists are always looking for new destinations. At the top of the ranking of the "ten best coastal cities" in Europe, in fact, is unexpectedly Valencia, appreciated by those asked for its architecture and gastronomy, starting of course with the Valencian paella, but also because it offers peace and quiet compared to more traditional choices where visitors flock.

Another 2023 summer vacation surprise is Albania, first revealed by the New York Times with a long article praising its low costs, beaches and nightlife, parties and festivals that attract young people from all over Europe, even from the United States. Sometimes, instead of repeating itself as the saying goes, history ends up being reversed: for a long time a former pro-Chinese communist dictatorship, then a desperate land whose population tried to immigrate illegally to mass to Italy on the other shore, now Albania is in fashion, attracting visitors instead of exporting immigrants.

There are two similar cases, Valencia and Albania, with a double message about the laws of supply and demand: on the one hand, travelers have more curiosity than expected and, thanks to the Internet, can find new things to explore on their own; on the other hand, any city or country can change, renew and progress, if it tries seriously. For the second point to be possible, an understanding is needed between local or national authorities and entrepreneurs willing to invest. We will see who will succeed in 2024: now is the time to plan the holidays. / Il Venerdi – Bota.al
