The Portuguese government announced its intention to recognize the state of Palestine during the UN General Assembly in September 2025. The office of Prime Minister Luis Montenegro stated that the process is ongoing and will include consultations with the President of the Republic and Parliament before a final decision is made.
The move follows similar announcements from other Western countries, including France, Britain, Spain and Canada. French President Emmanuel Macron confirmed last week that France would recognize Palestine in September, becoming the first major Western power and permanent member of the UN Security Council to take such a step.
British Prime Minister Keir Starmer declared that the United Kingdom will recognize the Palestinian state if Israel does not take concrete steps to stop the war in Gaza and support a long-term peace process.
Spain, along with Ireland and Norway, has already recognized Palestine since May and June 2024, emphasizing the importance of a two-state solution. Meanwhile, Canada, according to Prime Minister Mark Carney, intends to recognize Palestine at the General Assembly, provided that the Palestinian Authority implements democratic reforms and ensures the demilitarization of the future state.
This development reflects a growing diplomatic push to support a two-state solution amid the humanitarian crisis in Gaza and ongoing tensions in the region.
