Eight dead and over 50 injured in Russian attacks in Kiev

At least eight people have been killed and more than 50 others injured in Russian drone and missile attacks in Ukraine in the early hours of this morning, Ukrainian officials have said.

Among the dead is a six-year-old, while three other victims have been confirmed in the area of an apartment block that collapsed as a result of the attacks.

Tymur Tkachenko, head of the Kiev military administration, said the death toll could rise, as damage was caused to dozens of locations in the Ukrainian capital.

Russian attacks have continued despite threats from US President Donald Trump to impose tougher sanctions on Moscow if Russian leader Vladimir Putin does not agree to a ceasefire by August 8.

Kiev Mayor Vitali Klitschko said in a Telegram post that the windows of a children's hospital in the Shevchenkivskyi district were completely broken.

Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiha said in a post on X – formerly Twitter – that Kiev is witnessing a "terrible morning" and that there are still people under the rubble.

According to him, President Trump has been "very patient" with Putin, and now is the time for "maximum pressure on Moscow" through sanctions.

Earlier in July, Trump had set a 50-day ultimatum for the Kremlin to reach a deal with Kiev or face economic consequences.

On Monday, Trump reduced the ultimatum to "10 to 12 days," expressing his dissatisfaction with Putin's actions in Ukraine, more than three years after Moscow launched the war in the country.

Trump did not say that the Russian president was lying to him, but that there were contradictions between Putin's rhetoric in their phone calls, and then in the launch of missiles on Ukrainian cities.

The war in Ukraine began on February 24, 2022. Russian President Vladimir Putin calls the war a “special military operation” to demilitarize Ukraine. The West has responded to Russia by hitting the country’s economy with harsh sanctions. The war has killed thousands and displaced millions from their homes./ REL
