At least 60 people have died in northern China due to extreme weather conditions, including 31 at a nursing home in the mountainous Miyun region of Beijing, in one of the deadliest floods to hit the Chinese capital in recent years.
In Beijing, 44 people have died and nine others are missing as of noon Thursday, Beijing Deputy Mayor Xia Linmao said at a press conference.
The heavy rains began a week ago and peaked in the Beijing area and surrounding provinces on Monday, with up to 573.5 mm of rainfall in Miyun — levels that local media described as “extremely devastating.” The average annual rainfall in Beijing is about 600 mm.
