This system cannot survive because the changes brought by young people will always happen, it is a matter of demographic change of generations, said professor Aleksandar Kavčič regarding the choices that the students are seeking.
He added that students are like a glass of clear water and that a single drop of paint or dirt can cloud it, and the opposition should not bring that cloud. Kavčić said he believes that students are protesting for legitimate reasons, because something is wrong in this country.
“So, this is a call from students, citizens, citizens of this country, for something to change in this country. And now we have a reaction, we have resistance to change, and this is obviously not good. Changes coming from young people will always happen because it is a demographic change. This system cannot survive.
If the demographic situation is such that today we have 50 percent of Serbia supporting students, in ten years we will have 70 percent, because all of today's students and pupils will become young people in ten years, and new generations of young people will follow them. This is simply going to happen ,” he said.
According to him, the current system will fall, it is simply a matter of time, but according to him, the only question is which direction the new spirit will take.
"It can be painless or very painful. Throughout history, we have had very painful paths of change in government ," he said.
Kavčić is one of those whose name is mentioned in the context of the student list, and as he points out to N1 , his problems began when this information became public.
“My problems with being stopped at the airport started the moment it got out—I don’t even know how it got out, but it got out who the people were who were being considered for the student list, and so some of us started getting followed. I was stopped at the airport and at every border crossing,” he explains.
He adds that the list of students is still unknown, even for those being rumored as potential candidates.
“I don’t know if I’ll be on the student list. The student list hasn’t been published and it seems like it won’t be before the elections are announced. And who knows? Well, they know why they’re compiling this student list. When it’s published, I think someone will have to speak up or let this student list make a program, or serve them a program and then say that this student list now represents these views as well.
"However, yes, it has been confirmed that this should be a list that will be in the assembly for 18 months. As representatives of the people, for these 18 months, it is necessary to create such an atmosphere in society that guarantees fair and honest elections ," says Kavčić.
Regarding the opposition's calls for a debate on the upcoming elections, to which they have also invited students, Kavčić emphasizes that over the last five years there has been complete confusion among the opposition, which is unable to unite, and now, he says, he would like to unite the students.
“Students are like a glass of clear water. If you put a drop of paint or sand in it, the whole glass will become cloudy. And why would the opposition introduce this drop of fog now? ” he said.
He points out that no one can guarantee that student list representatives will do things right, but that there is a very small chance that they will screw things up.
“On the other hand, there is a strong guarantee that if the opposition interferes with the student movement, it will destroy it. What guarantee is there that people such as athletes or prominent figures with integrity, elected by the students, will do something?
There are no guarantees, but there is a very small chance that they will ruin things. Because they haven't done it yet,” says Kavčić.
