"Thanks to the United States, the French don't speak German." This was the White House's reaction on Monday, responding to comments by MEP Raphaël Glucksmann, who urged Americans during his speech for the Place Publique party to "bring back the Statue of Liberty."
Following comments made by the head of Place Publique, Raphaël Glucksmann, inviting Americans "who have chosen to side with tyrants" to return the "Statue of Liberty" to France, American authorities reacted this Monday, March 17.
"It's only thanks to the United States of America that the French don't speak German today, so they should be very grateful to our great country," White House spokeswoman Karoline Leavitt said at a press conference, calling Raphaël Glucksmann a "little, unknown politician."
"It was given to you as a gift, but you apparently despise it. So she will be very happy here with us," said Glucksmann.
Standing 93 m (300 ft) tall, including the base, the Statue of Liberty, located in New York City, was designed by Frenchman Auguste Bartholdi and engineer Gustave Eiffel. It was offered by France to the United States as a gesture of friendship. It was unveiled in October 1886 on the occasion of the centennial of the American Declaration of Independence.
