The countries of the European Union have significantly increased military spending, fueled by the Russia-Ukraine conflict. The International Institute for Strategic Studies (INSS) estimates that spending is 50 percent higher than 10 years ago, but the Union still has a lot of work to do to match the military might of countries like Russia.
European countries have increased military spending after the Russian invasion of Ukraine. This was announced by the International Institute for Strategic Studies, which, however, pointed out that there is still a lot to do for EU countries to be able to face other powers such as Russia.
The Institute's report was published at a time when European leaders and the NATO secretary general have discussed the trans-Atlantic relationship in Budapest. This happened after the threats of Donald Trump during the electoral campaign, who suggested the possibility of withdrawing the United States from NATO commitments and cutting off aid to Ukraine, bringing serious consequences for Europe.
The report says that defense spending in 2024 by NATO member countries was 50 percent higher than 10 years ago. However, a problem remains the lack of financial stability. The INSS has also warned that many European armies are suffering from a shortage of military personnel, underlining that the main armed forces of the old continent are underpowered.
