End of Musk's government term, Trump affected: Elon won't really leave

President Donald Trump said Elon Musk is "not really going away" as he held a press conference Friday to mark the end of the Tesla CEO's tenure as a special government employee overseeing the US DOGE Service.

Trump praised Elon Musk for his work overseeing the U.S. Department of Defense, the cost-cutting group that identified more than $160 billion in federal spending cuts after it was rolled out to dozens of agencies starting in January.

Trump said her savings would grow over time and be codified by Congress.

"I think he'll be in constant contact," Trump told reporters in the Oval Office as Musk stood next to him, referring to DOGE as his "baby."

What DOGE will look like after Musk remains to be seen, but the White House and its allies assert that it will continue its mission of reducing costs.

President Donald Trump began his press conference with a clip from CNBC discussing the goods trade deficit, which shrank significantly in April as tariffs took their toll.

Trump's tariffs are still in effect - although a court ruling this week temporarily halted most of them, an appeals court has temporarily suspended that ruling.

Trump insisted that Musk will remain involved in DOGE, adding "it's his baby."

President Donald Trump, thanking Musk for leading "the most comprehensive and far-reaching government reform program in generations," said that "today, it's about a man named Elon, and he is one of the greatest business leaders and innovators the world has ever produced."

"He stepped forward to put his immense talent at the service of our nation, and we appreciate that," the President said.

Trump then showed a video of CNBC's Joe Kernan and Rick Santelli praising the Trump administration.
