Barcelona has decided to officially suspend institutional relations with the Israeli government and the friendship agreement with the city of Tel Aviv, as a political act in support of the rights of the Palestinian people. The decision was approved by the City Council with a document of around 20 points, which states that the suspension will be in force “until respect for international law and the fundamental rights of the Palestinian people is restored.”
Barcelona's socialist mayor, Jaume Collboni, declared that "the level of suffering and death that Gaza has experienced over the past year and a half, as well as the repeated attacks by the Israeli government, make any relationship between the two cities unstable." The friendship agreement signed on September 24, 1998 with Tel Aviv-Jaffa has been officially suspended.
Among other measures approved, the council urges the Barcelona Expo not to host pavilions of the Israeli government or arms companies that profit from the “genocide, occupation, apartheid and colonization of Palestinian territories.” A similar recommendation is being considered for the port of Barcelona to block ships carrying weapons to Israel.
This is not the first case of such a decision in Barcelona; in February 2023, former mayor Ada Colau temporarily suspended relations with Israel, but they were restored a few months later with Collboni's coming to power.
This move by Barcelona coincides with major developments in Spanish diplomacy; on May 28, 2024, Pedro Sanchez's government officially recognized the state of Palestine, along with Ireland and Norway. In recent months, Spain has emerged as one of the strongest opponents of Benjamin Netanyahu's government within the European Union.
