The Israeli army announced today that more than 250,000 people have fled Gaza City and relocated to other areas of the Palestinian enclave, following the intensification of Israeli ground and air military operations in recent weeks.
For its part, the Gaza Strip Civil Defense Service reported 5 Palestinians dead since dawn due to Israeli shelling, a day after at least 50 people died in the Palestinian enclave, according to the same source.
"According to military estimates, more than a quarter of a million residents of Gaza City have fled for their safety," Israeli army spokesman Avichai Andrai, who speaks Arabic, wrote in the newspaper H.
The UN estimates that about one million Palestinians live in and around Gaza City, the enclave's largest urban center.
The Israeli military's goal is to take control of Gaza City, which Israeli officials present as one of Hamas' last strongholds.
Today, Israeli forces dropped leaflets in the city urging residents of the western neighborhoods to leave. At the same time, the Civil Defense announced that Israeli airstrikes are continuing.
"The army is moving in force into your area and is determined to disintegrate and defeat Hamas," the leaflet read. "For your safety, leave immediately via al-Rashid Street to the south. We have warned you," they added.
The Israeli armed forces have demolished several high-rise residential buildings in Gaza City in recent days, with the army stating that it will "intensify the pace of targeted attacks with the aim of destroying Hamas' terrorist infrastructure and reducing the threat to troops."
Many humanitarian organizations believe that this new displacement of Palestinians to the southern part of the Gaza Strip is impossible and dangerous.
