Journalists in the United Group media feel under pressure and insecurity. It's about sums of money and behind-the-scenes deals. And the regime's belief that without critical media it's easier to stay in power.
In the saga surrounding the United Group media in Serbia, only two things are guaranteed to be at stake – great uncertainty and large sums of money. Most recently, minority owner and former head of the group, Dragan Sholak, received 250 million euros from a company owned by BC Partners as a bonus for the “successful sale” of a large part of the business in Serbia.
This "successful sale" actually marked a small hell for hundreds of journalists in Serbia working in media outlets such as N1, Nova S, Danas, Radar and others under the auspices of United Group.
Since Sholak was removed from the position of head of the corporation, the new leaders have reportedly failed to guarantee these media outlets funding and editorial freedom. In addition to big money and hundreds of jobs, the future of free information in Serbia is also at stake. Because the television stations N1 and Nova S, which are extremely critical of the government of Aleksandar Vučić, have the largest capacity, personnel and money to report on political events.
What is paid the most here?
Several employees of the United Group media, whom the DW journalist spoke to, say they know nothing more than what is written in the media, and she hasn't written much. There is a feeling of uncertainty.
President Vučić once said that everything would be over by November, and that it was not he who was closing N1 and Nova S, but their company. “We have no idea what will happen. We are working, as usual, but for how long – no one knows,” says one journalist. Another DW source says: “I think it’s a done deal. They took the money and now there’s no turning back.”
He alludes to the fact that the main owner of United Group, the investment fund BC Partners, began doing what investment funds usually do at the beginning of the year – selling more expensively what they bought cheaper.
In a spectacular transfer, cable operator SBB – which had been a safe haven for the broadcasting of N1 and Nova S – was sold. Net TV plus and the rights to all sports broadcasts were also sold to state-owned Telekom, a former competitor. This made Telekom a monopolist for sports content and brought BC Partners and, partly, Sholak, who is still a minority owner, one and a half billion euros.
Is it part of the deal to silence critical media in the midst of student protests and before elections in which there is a real chance that the Serbian Progressive Party will lose for the first time?

Redaksitë e medias United Group u kanë bërë thirrje vazhdimisht pronarëve të tyre që t’u japin garanci mbijetese. Herën e parë që u përmend një shumë – N1 dhe Nova S thanë se kanë nevojë për dymbëdhjetë milionë euro në vit për të operuar siç duhet.
Çfarë do të ndodhë më pas? As Dragoljub Petroviq, kryeredaktor i gazetës Danas, nuk e di. “Jemi në një situatë krejtësisht të panjohur. Po presim rezultatin e konfliktit në korporatë dhe, nëpërmjet regjistrimit të bisedës telefonike që u publikua, shohim se edhe Presidenti Vuçiq po ndërhyn.”
“Kjo na ka shqetësuar edhe më shumë sepse Vuçiq nuk ka qëllime të mira ndaj mediave që janë kritike”, thotë Petroviq për DW.
“Tani ndihemi sikur jemi në ambasadën amerikane në Saigon në vitin 1975. Po presim të shohim se çfarë do të ndodhë dhe nëse do të na duhet të evakuohemi në një vend më të mirë.”
Por në cilin vend më të mirë? Në Serbi, duket se po ndodh një zhdukje e madhe e mediave të pavarura. Vetëm që nga fillimi i vitit, Presidenti i SHBA-së Donald Trump ka mbyllur Zërin e Amerikës dhe është marrë vendimi për të mbyllur Free Europe/Radio Liberty.
I gjithë financimi i projektit, i cili ishte veçanërisht i mirëpritur për mediat e vogla dhe lokale në Serbi, është ndërprerë. Shërbimi ballkanik i Al Jazeera-s është mbyllur, ndërsa Euronews, i cili financohet nga Telekomi Serb, ka pasur një valë shkurtimesh dhe largimesh.
Kjo është arsyeja pse Petroviq thotë, se mbyllja ose heshtja e medias United Group do të ishte “dramatike”. “Danas është një media e vogël që ndoshta mund të përballojë vetë, sepse më parë ishte e pavarur dhe disi punonte me këmbëngulje dhe paga të ulëta. Por këto stacione televizive nuk mund të punojnë, sepse është një prodhim i shtrenjtë.”
Sulmet nga Kremlini?
Në të njëjtën kohë, një sulm ndaj mediave më të vogla të pavarura erdhi edhe nga Kremlini. Shërbimi rus SVR dyshohet se përcaktoi që gazeta javore Vreme, agjencia FoNet, mediat lokale “Južne vijesti”, Boom 93, Podrinske dhe të tjera ishin gjithashtu të përfshira në përgatitjen e “Maidanit” në Serbi, të paguar me para nga Brukseli.
Kulmi supozohet të jetë më 1 nëntor, përvjetori i shembjes së tendës që mori gjashtëmbëdhjetë jetë në stacionin hekurudhor të Novi Sadit vitin e kaluar. Presidenti Vuçiq falënderoi rusët për këtë “informacion” dhe tha se gjithçka do të hetohet.
"Vučić is now very close to falling from power, the protests are not calming down, and now he is probably relying on the fact that at least without these large critical television stations it will be easier for him to govern," says Dragoljub Petrović.
The editors and employees of the United Group media have only one hope – that the resulting smoke will force the owners from the investment fund to pull the handbrake. The resolution of the saga may be very close./DW
