Due to US President Donald Trump's tariff policy, Germans are very worried about the German economy. They also have little trust in Chancellor Friedrich Merz.
US President Donald Trump continues to bombard the world with his tariffs, some of which are drastic. He agreed with the EU that Europe would have to pay a 15 percent tariff on certain goods exported from the EU to the United States. US goods exported to the EU are exempt from the tariffs. This agreement with EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen is highly controversial and has caused a stir in the media.
According to a survey conducted by German public broadcaster ARD for the show "Deutschlandtrend", Germans continue to be concerned about economic stability due to President Trump's often confusing tariff policies.
65 percent of Germans are worried or very worried, and only 5 percent are not worried at all. Compared to the previous survey, fewer people in this survey expressed concern. This is certainly due to Trump's volatile politics.
Little trust in the new chancellor
Even before his election, Friedrich Merzk had managed to get the Bundestag to change Germany's rigid debt-control policy. Over the next few years, 500 billion euros will be made available for improving railways, roads and better schools. Almost the same amount of money will be used to rearm the Bundeswehr.
This is a clear departure from the conservatives' election campaign promise not to take on new loans. Has this damaged the new chancellor's image? According to a survey for the "Deutschlandtrend" program, only 26 percent of respondents today think that Merz is someone they can trust. This figure is three percentage points lower than the survey conducted in February.
For the current ARD-Deutschlandtrend show, the public opinion research institute infratest-dimap surveyed 1,321 representatively selected citizens between August 4 and 6 of this year./ DW
