The Court of Cassation gave the right to Meloni, the Italian minister: Soon we

After the two blows he received from the court of Rome, yesterday the Court of Cassation gave the right to Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, deciding that it is up to the Italian government to assess the countries from which immigrants come as safe or not.

Italy's Minister of the Interior, Matteo Piantedosi, reacted today to this decision, who said that the obstacles fell and that now solid foundations have been laid to continue with the plan. Piantedosi emphasized that the sending of emigrants to the Albanian camps in Gjadër will start soon.

"The first decisions of some magistrates have aggravated the issue of centers in Albania for immigrants, who found a first, important denial in a recent decision of the Supreme Court. We are confident that we have laid the foundations for overcoming any doubt with the latest regulatory intervention in so-called 'safe havens'. And on this basis we hope to resume the transfers as soon as possible, which are not necessary these days, because the preventive measures to fight the departures from Libya and Tunisia are working very well" , he said in an interview for " La Stampa".

Furthermore, the Minister of the Interior Matteo Piantedosi stated that on the topic of immigrants and centers in Albania, a positive response will come soon also from the European Court of Justice.

"I am also sure that the future decisions of the European Court of Justice will affirm the reasons for the law and what is already clear at the European level: those centers, they are an important part of the Strategy to fight irregular immigration. One of those 'innovative solutions' requested by the European Council to combat illegal immigration managed by human traffickers," he said.

The minister underlines that in 2024, irregular arrivals were reduced by 60%, compared to the previous year, and 38% compared to 2022.

"For the second year in a row, repatriations of deported immigrants are on the rise, with a further increase of 16%. They were the result of targeted actions implemented by the Ministry of the Interior, including close cooperation with the police forces of the countries of origin and transit, which in two years made it possible to block the departure of 192 thousand irregular migrants who were from Libya and Tunisia on our shores. We are also supporting the same countries in the assisted voluntary repatriation projects of immigrants from their territory, whose repatriations in 2024 were over 21,000. I have always had and expressed faith in justice and respect for justice, but it was clear to all that some magistrates had publicly and even previously expressed opposition to this as well as other government initiatives to combat irregular immigration , in any case, we have decided to respond by choosing the path of appeal to the higher courts against their decisions and the adaptation of the legislation" , he concluded.
