The International Court of Justice orders Israel to stop the offensive in Rafah

Judges at the highest court of the United Nations (UN) ordered Israel on Friday to stop its military attack on the southern Gaza city of Rafah, reports Reuters.

Reading a ruling from the International Court of Justice (ICJ), or World Court, the president of the judicial body, Nawaf Salam, said the interim measures ordered by the court in March did not fully address the situation in Gaza now and the conditions for a new emergency had been met. . I order.

"Israel must immediately stop its military offensive" in Rafah, he said.

The court upheld a request by South Africa to order Israel to halt its offensive in Rafah, a week after Pretoria called for the measure in a case accusing Israel of genocide.

Israel has repeatedly dismissed the case's allegations of genocide as baseless, arguing in court that its operations in Gaza are self-defense and aimed at Hamas militants who attacked Israel on Oct. 7.

An Israeli government spokesman said ahead of Friday's decision that "no power on Earth will stop Israel from protecting its citizens and going after Hamas in Gaza."

The court is the highest body of the UN for examining disputes between states. Its decisions are final and binding, but have been ignored in the past, Reuters reports. The court has no enforcement powers.

In previous rulings, the court ordered Israel to prevent acts of genocide against Palestinians and allow aid to flow to Gaza, while stopping short of ordering a halt to Israeli military operations.
