Venezuela's Supreme Court appoints Maduro's successor

The Constitutional Council of the Supreme Court of Venezuela ordered Vice President Delcy Rodriguez to assume the duties of interim president in the absence of Nicolas Maduro, who was arrested on Saturday morning in an operation by US forces.

The court's decision says Rodriguez will assume "the function of president of the Republic of Venezuela, with the aim of guaranteeing administrative continuity and the comprehensive defense of the nation," Reuters reports.

The decision adds that the court will examine the case with the aim of "determining the applicable legal framework in order to guarantee the continuity of the state, the management of the government and the protection of sovereignty in the face of the forced absence of the President of the Republic."

The US military carried out an operation in Caracas, in which Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro was arrested, who was then sent to the US and detained in New York.

The plane carrying Maduro landed near New York on Saturday evening, after which he was transported to the city by helicopter, before being taken in a large convoy and under heavy police escort to the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn, Reuters reports.

Footage released by US authorities shows Maduro handcuffed and blindfolded during the flight, then being escorted down a corridor to the offices of the US Drug Enforcement Agency, where he was heard wishing them a "Happy New Year".

New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani condemned the United States' "unilateral attack" on Venezuela, saying it was an act of war and a violation of federal and international law.
