Maduro's arrest, Pope Leo XIV demands respect for Venezuela's
Pope Leo XIV

A day after the arrest of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro by US forces, Pope Leo XIV expressed concern about the situation there and called for respect for the country's sovereignty and Constitution.

During the prayer in St. Peter's Square, Pope Leo XIV emphasized that "the good of the beloved Venezuelan people must prevail over everything else."

The Holy Father called for cooperation with the aim of building a peaceful, sustainable future based on coexistence, emphasizing that special attention must be paid to the poorest, affected by the difficult economic situation.

The Pope's statements come at a time of high international tension, following the arrest by the US of President Nicolás Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, who are expected to face charges of drug trafficking in American territory.

Earlier, US President Donald Trump declared that the US would “govern Venezuela until a safe transition,” warning of a second wave of attacks in case of resistance. Meanwhile, Venezuela’s Supreme Court ordered Vice President Delcy Rodríguez to take over as president due to Maduro’s “forced absence.”
