Snowfall blanketed the plateaus of northeastern Turkey, while firefighters battled blazes 1,600 kilometers to the west, on the coast.
Snowfall fell in many provinces in the eastern part of Anatolia, such as Rize, Trabzon, Bayburt and Erzurum, weather conditions unseen in decades, according to Turkish media.
According to a local journalist who spoke to AFP from Rizunda, the snowfall lasted for almost five hours. "I am 65 years old, I have spent almost my entire life in Rizunda, this is the first time I have seen snow in July," said Gencaga Karafazlioglu.
Footage broadcast from Rizounda by the DHA news agency shows a stone house covered in more than 10 centimeters of snow.
Snow fell throughout the northeastern part of the country, over an area of approximately 100 kilometers.
According to the state-run Anadolu news agency, torrential rains hit the Trabzon province and turned into snow in some parts, while the air temperature marked a significant drop.
In contrast, 1,600 kilometers to the west, the tourist region of Izmir continues to face fires, fueled by drought and winds gusting to 85 kilometers per hour.
