Greece is hit by 6 earthquakes in a row, residents panic

Greece has been affected by a wave of seismic tremors as 6 consecutive earthquakes hit Crete today. No injuries or property damage were reported.

The first earthquake hit Crete. The inhabitants of Karpathos and Attica are shocked and in panic, as they felt more on the island of Dodecanese.

As announced by the Geodynamic Institute of the National Observatory of Athens, an earthquake with a magnitude of 4.2 on the Richter scale was recorded at 02:15 this morning in the maritime area 28 kilometers south of Karpathos, or about 435 kilometers southeast of the capital.

It was followed at 10:02 in the wider area of Karpathos, specifically 89.5 km southwest of the island by a new slightly stronger earthquake, with an intensity of 4.4 on the Richter scale, according to the Unified National Seismological Network.

The epicenter of the earthquake is located in the sea area 24 km east-northeast of Zakros in Crete and 89.5 km southwest of Karpathos, while the focal depth of the earthquake is calculated at 10 km, Greek media reported.

About 40 minutes later, an aftershock occurred in the area with an intensity of 3 on the Richter scale, also with a focal depth of 10 km.

However, even in Athens there was an earthquake with a magnitude of 2.8 on the Richter scale, after similar earthquakes in the previous weeks, centered again in Chalandri. The tremors were recorded at 03:22 with a focal depth of 5.7 km. New, smaller tremors followed in the same area, with an intensity of 2.1 Richter at 04:47 and 2.2 Richter at 08:54, and in fact with a focal depth of only the last 2 km.

Although the tremors in Attica were not of significant magnitude, they were enough to disturb residents in densely populated neighborhoods, who were more shaken by the superficial nature of these microtremors. Three more earthquakes were recorded this week in Attica and Patra, and even one in Cyprus.
