Greece is engulfed by bad weather and torrential rains. Since yesterday, Thessaly and the city of Kardica have experienced flooding in the evening hours, while the roads have turned into rivers.
The percentage of rain that fell in the city reached almost 100 millimeters (specifically 97.6) based on the measurements of the meteorological station of the National Observatory of Athens.
In fact, the rains have reached 312 mm/h in a few minutes and the intervention of the police was needed to regulate the traffic and stop the passage of vehicles.
In the region of Magnesia, the phenomenon has severely hit South Pelion during the night, flooding roads and alleys in Zagora, Milies, but without creating any serious problems. In the city of Volos, there were problems with electricity during the night, but they were restored very quickly.
An Israeli couple in Limionas, Zagora municipality, who were staying in an Airbnb apartment, called for help after being frightened by a nearby stream that gushed out of the bed. The fire brigade immediately arrived at the scene and transported them safely to Tsagarada.
The Minister of Civil Defense and Climate Crisis Vassilis Kikilias is in Thessaly since yesterday to closely monitor the development of bad weather.
"There was a justified concern of the citizens here in Thessaly because the memories of a disaster are fresh, that's why we were all here, coordinated and organized. I am glad because so far this effort has paid off. By working together and coordinated we can get very good results", emphasized the minister from Larisa.
During the night, it is being investigated whether there are landslides in the mountain network and especially in Pelion, where several millimeters of rain have fallen. However, a strong storm also hit the islands of the Northern Sporades, Skiathos and Skopelos.
The rain events until the early hours of the afternoon will be particularly intense and show greater danger in the following areas: Thessaly (mainly in the east), Sporades, southern Pieria, northern Evia, prefecture of Fthiotida (in the north) , the eastern Aegean islands. (mainly Chios and Lesvos).
