A strike organized by the CGIL (Italian General Confederation of Labor) and the USB (United States Social Security Association) will take place today in Italy in support of Gaza and against Israel's attack on the Flotilla ships.
Local public transport, buses, trams and metros will be suspended for 24 hours.
Rail transport has been suspended since yesterday evening and will continue until 20:59 today. Long-distance trains will continue to operate normally.
Demonstrations and marches were held in many Italian cities yesterday evening. Tens of thousands of people took to the streets peacefully, but in some cases the demonstrations threatened to escalate into clashes.
Italy's Deputy Prime Minister Matteo Salvini said that anyone who blocks the country will face the consequences personally.
"The last warning, if common sense prevails, we will behave in a certain way. If arrogance and violence and oppression prevail, we will know how to react," Matteo Salvini said in a video posted on social media.
The first effects of the general strike have been visible in the capital since this morning. Chaos has erupted at Termini station, where many trains have been canceled and delays of up to 80 minutes have been reported.
Protesters have gathered at various points across the city, with more likely to gather later. "We are blocking everything to stop the genocide. Together, we can liberate Palestine from Israeli occupation. We will be a tide in the streets again," the activists announced.
