UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres warned of the incalculable regional consequences of a possible Israeli ground attack on Rafah.
This is after hundreds of thousands of Palestinians displaced by the war have gathered in the southern Gaza Strip, on the border with Egypt.
" Such an action would exponentially increase what is already a humanitarian nightmare, with incalculable regional consequences ," Guterres told the UN General Assembly.
He again called for an immediate humanitarian ceasefire and the release of all Israeli hostages being held in Gaza.
The UN chief reiterated calls for an immediate humanitarian ceasefire and the unconditional release of all hostages.
He added that the situation in Gaza is a festering wound in the collective conscience that threatens the entire region.
" Nothing justifies the horrific terrorist attacks launched by Hamas against Israel on October 7. There is no justification for the collective punishment of the Palestinian people.
However, Israeli military operations have resulted in destruction and death in Gaza on a scale and speed without parallel since I became Secretary-General ," he concluded.
