According to a report by experts from the Institute for the Study of War (ISW), Vladimir Putin is clearly responsible for the downing of the small private plane carrying Yevgeny Prigozhin and other prominent Wagner figures.

Putin is said to have been attending a public concert commemorating the 80th anniversary of the Battle of Kursk when Prigozhin's plane was shot down by Russian air defenses.
"Putin's presence at the televised concert brought back memories of Soviet state television showing Swan Lake in August 1991 when the Soviet Union collapsed," added the Institute's experts.
Russian sources said it has been exactly two months since Wagner's attempted armed uprising began, during which its fighters shot down several Russian helicopters and killed at least 13 Russian servicemen.
"The decision to use Russian air defenses as a method of killing Prigozhin allowed the Russian Ministry of Defense to immediately avenge one of the deadliest days for the Russian air force since the start of the full-scale invasion of Ukraine.
"Putin suffered considerable humiliation by failing to stop Wagner's uprising, by relying on Lukashenko to stop Prigozhin's march on Moscow, and by failing to punish the organization's military responsible for the downing of the Russian airliner on June 24," it concluded. Institute.
