Tyler Robinson is expected to go on trial today to face charges in the killing of activist Charlie Kirk last Wednesday at the University of Utah and faces charges that could lead to the death penalty.
Charlie Kirk murder suspect Tyler Robinson allegedly confessed to the killing in an online chat before turning himself in to police, it has been revealed.
"Hey guys, I have some bad news for you all," Robinson reportedly wrote in a Discord message, according to the Washington Post.
"I was at UVU yesterday. I'm sorry about all this," he announced.
Discord is reportedly cooperating with the FBI and local authorities in their investigation and has provided investigators with details about its online presence.
The platform previously revealed that an internal investigation "did not show any evidence that the suspect planned this incident or promoted violence on Discord."
Robinson's arrest followed a 33-hour manhunt, which was preceded by the release of photos and videos by federal authorities for information.
It is alleged that Robinson harbored hatred for Kirk and attributed this to a "leftist ideology" that had developed in recent years.
Robinson's family and friends said he spent a lot of time searching the "dark corners of the internet," Utah Governor Spencer Cox claimed.
Cox added that the suspect had been radicalized "within a fairly short period of time."
On Monday, the FBI confirmed that DNA on a towel wrapped around a rifle found near the scene of the shooting matched Robinson's.
Investigators also used DNA evidence to link Robinson to a screwdriver found on the roof where he was fatally shot.
The FBI director told Fox News that Robinson had written in a note before the shooting that he had the opportunity to kill Kirk and that he would do so.
Investigators managed to recover the contents of the note after it had been destroyed, Patel said, paraphrasing the note without revealing further details.
Tyler Robinson continues to fail to cooperate with authorities, which still leaves his motive for the murder unclear.
