Palestinian reports said IDF tanks had entered the heart of the city in scenes and levels of warfare unseen in northern Gaza for perhaps two years.
After weeks of escalating airstrikes on Gaza City, including the collapse of an increasing number of high-rise buildings, it appears that the IDF has finally reached the tipping point for a larger-scale ground invasion.
Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz has announced a new phase in the Israel Defense Forces' (IDF) offensive against the already devastated urban sprawl where hundreds of thousands of people have taken shelter.
“Gaza is burning,” Katz said Tuesday morning. He added that “the IDF is hitting the terrorist infrastructure with an iron fist.”
"IDF soldiers are fighting heroically to create the conditions for the release of the hostages and the defeat of Hamas," Katz said, adding "we will not retreat or turn back until the mission is completed."
According to the Israeli military, about 300,000 Palestinians have been displaced from Gaza City in recent weeks, although many more have remained in place due to insecurity in other parts of the Gaza Strip.

The escalation of Israeli bombing of Gaza City came shortly after a visit by US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who declared the Trump administration's "unwavering support" for Israel.
As he left the country, heading to Qatar on Tuesday morning, Rubio told reporters: “The Israelis have started to take operations there. So we think we have a very short window of time in which a deal can be reached. We don’t have months left and we probably have days and maybe a few weeks to go.”
A Hamas statement issued in the early hours of Tuesday said the Trump administration "bears direct responsibility" for escalating the conflict through its "open bias" and warned that the offensive would "threaten the lives of captured Israeli soldiers."

Selia Qendrore e Forumit të Pengjeve dhe Familjeve të Zhdukura kritikoi vendimin për të intensifikuar veprimet ushtarake në Qytetin e Gazës në një deklaratë të hënën në mbrëmje.

Rubio pesimist për marrëveshje
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said on Tuesday, as he traveled to Qatar, that he would ask it to remain as a mediator in the Gaza war, a week after Israeli airstrikes against Hamas leaders in Doha.
Rubio expressed pessimism about a ceasefire agreement while flying from Tel Aviv amid intensified IDF bombing of Gaza, but told reporters that Qatar could uniquely help, Agence France-Presse reports.
"We will ask Qatar to continue to do what it has done and we appreciate it very much, which is to play a constructive role in trying to get this done," Rubio told reporters at Tel Aviv's Ben Gurion Airport.
"Of course they have to decide whether they want to do this after last week or not, but we want them to know that if there is any country in the world that can help conclude this through negotiations, it is Qatar."
Rubio said the US will work with Qatar to finalize a defense agreement soon, despite Israeli military action last week.
Albanian: Gaza will become an uninhabitable place
The United Nations rapporteur on human rights in the occupied territories, Francesca Albanese, has said that the aim of the offensive on Gaza City is to make it uninhabitable.
"This is the last part of Gaza that must be made unlivable," she said on Monday.
But the Israeli mission to the UN rejected her remarks, blaming Hamas for the destruction, Julian Borger reported, while Benjamin Netanyahu defended Israel's tactics. "We are not knocking down those towers [in Gaza City] to scare people," the Israeli prime minister said. "Those towers are serving as Hamas strongholds."
The Israeli army chief of staff, Lieutenant General Eyal Zamir, is widely reported to have deep doubts about the Gaza City offensive, arguing that it would not destroy Hamas and would be costly in the lives of Israeli soldiers and hostages. / Adapted from Pamphlet i/
