Adolf Hitler? A good guy. Jews? They rule America, they must be eliminated. Women like to be raped. Until recently, the proponent of these theses, Nick Fuentes, a far-right provocateur with a small following, was out of the Maga world, even though Donald Trump dined with him in 2022.
Criticized for giving credence to a Nazi supporter, Donald managed to get away with saying he was unaware of his extreme views.
But now, as the right-wing race to fill the void left by the killing of Charlie Kirk has begun to lead the more radical young man, Fuentes, drawn by Tucker Carlson, the most popular ultraconservative television host, much admired by Trump, is becoming a force to be reckoned with.
Donald Trump, who, to obscure the negative electoral signs of last Tuesday's vote, spoke of a split on the left after his victory in New York with a democratic socialist candidate whom he denounces as a communist extremist, now faces a potentially even sharper division at home, in the Maga world: between his traditional, ultraconservative fans, well-disposed to the authoritarian political formula of his presidency and supporters of an unwavering Judeo-Christian identity for America, and a phalanx of young far-right activists with ideas that until recently had no place in American politics.
We are talking about an ever-expanding network of digital tribes that have grown up in political languages exacerbated by social media, proudly declaring their white supremacism and even anti-Semitism, presenting them as the purest manifestations of the Maga ideology.
The issue erupted mid-week. Carlson hosted Fuentes on his show and essentially agreed with his outlandish arguments. “Decided” Trump supporters like House Speaker Mike Johnson and Senator Ted Cruz immediately criticized Carlson for providing his own megaphone to Fuentes’ anti-Semitism.
The Heritage Foundation, the conservative think tank that provided cultural and programmatic support for Republican presidencies from Reagan to Trump, which after disavowing it is now implementing the authoritarian plan proposed in its Project 2025, is in turmoil: many of its members are calling on President Kevin Roberts, a leader who has shifted the organization's center of gravity far to the right, to disavow Carlson, a close friend of Heritage.
Roberts not only refuses to do so, but he accuses his critics of being a class of globalists, an affront to the world of sovereignty. Furthermore, the president denounces the attack by a “poisonous coalition.” At that point, several prominent members of Heritage resign.
Others are looking for Roberts' head. Aware of his exaggeration, he apologizes for referring to poisoners (alluding to an old anti-Semitic stereotype), calls Fuentes an evil person, but continues to defend Carlson.
Thus, he finds himself caught between two fires: accused by Fuentes supporters of being a fearless opportunist, while Stephen Moore, a senior economist at Heritage, co-author of Project 2025, and a close Trump associate, argues that Roberts is now at the mercy of the “dark underworld of an online youth right” drawn to unacceptable theses.
The fire quickly spread beyond the foundation's perimeter, with figures like Brett Cooper, an actor, activist, and far-right commentator, defending Tucker Carlson and attacking Cruz and Johnson: they accused Democrats of exploiting Nazi-fascist sympathies against the right and then using the same rhetoric.
What about Trump? For now, he's keeping quiet. Vice President JD Vance, certainly no fan of Fuentes, who has hurled racist epithets at his wife, Usha, of Indian origin, is urging the two MAGA factions not to split, focusing on the things that unite the movement, such as the fight against illegal immigrants. The rest: Nazism, racism, sexism, are details. / Adapted from Corriere /
