California Governor Gavin Newsom, a potential contender for the 2028 Democratic presidential nomination, accused the group of Senate Democrats who voted with Republicans on a deal that could end the longest federal government shutdown in history of "capitulation" and "treason."
The breakaway group of Democratic senators defied Minority Leader Chuck Schumer and backed a compromise deal that would guarantee a vote on extending the expiring Affordable Care Act tax credits at the heart of the government shutdown deadlock. Schumer wanted the extension itself guaranteed in exchange for Democratic votes to reopen the government.
Newsom's harsh criticism increases pressure on Schumer over his leadership of Senate Democrats during the government shutdown.
"The Senate vote to shut down the federal government should have been a time for strength," Newsom said in a post on X, adding, "instead, we saw capitulation and a betrayal of working Americans. The American people need more from their leaders."
