7.7 magnitude earthquake in Southeast Asia, US Geological Survey raises alarm:

Thousands of people are suspected to have died after a powerful 7.7-magnitude earthquake shook Southeast Asia on Friday, toppling tall buildings in Thailand.

Horrifying scenes emerged of bodies lined up in the rubble as rescue teams searched for survivors from the earthquake, whose epicenter was detected near Mandalay, Myanmar's second largest city.

Although the scale of death and destruction was not immediately clear, the US Geological Survey (USGS) issued a red alert - estimating that deaths could range from 1,000 to 10,000, the New York Post writes.

"Major casualties and extensive damage are possible and the disaster is likely to be widespread," the federal agency warned.

The destruction spread hundreds of miles from the epicenter, including to neighboring Thailand, where a skyscraper under construction collapsed in the capital Bangkok, Thai authorities said.

A dramatic video circulating on social media showed the 30-story building with a crane on top collapsing in a cloud of dust near the city's popular Chatuchak market, as screaming onlookers fled the scene.
