A barrage of rockets from Gaza hundreds of Hamas militants entered Israel massacring soldiers and civilians and taking over 100 hostages.
It is the worst nightmare for a country that is supposed to have eyes and ears everywhere, but which according to national security experts marked a catastrophic failure.
" We have an overconfidence in the military aspect of the current defense mechanism, in the advanced air defense systems, or in the military barriers that were completed last year that were believed to prevent any attack. Then we have the lack of information and finally the failure of the line of defense itself. So, there are 3 circles of defense that have not done what they should have done" , declared Peter Lerner, an expert on Israel's national security.
Israeli intelligence services are also considered among the best in the world, but they could not prevent what happened.
" Just two weeks ago, early officials and intelligence officers were saying that Hamas does not care about a wider conflict because of past losses, that the movement is healing old wounds because it will maintain its rule in the Gaza Strip and doesn't want to risk it. But it seems clear that the calculations were done wrong, very wrong, by the intelligence community ," Lerner declared.
The expert predicts that the military will move in with its infantry in situations involving hostages and an investigation to clarify the responsibilities for the security failure for what has been called the Israeli "9/11".
